How to Pull Together a Hippie/Boho Outfit

Hippie, boho, bobo chic, hobo-grunge, all these variations on the same theme, make me think of freedom, a nomadic lifestyle and breaking the rules. Even if it means a long and flowing dress with sandals or, even better, bare feet, or if it is skinny jeans tucked into boots, an embroidered tunic or a cardigan, it all says something about you. It tells about your creativity and talent at mixing colors and patterns, or maybe just your desire to be different from others.

You can pull together your bohemian look by layering materials, patterns or colors, wearing an unlimited number of accessories and minimal make-up. Ethnic-inspired earrings, over-sized sunglasses, wooden bracelets and lots of bangles, they are all allowed. Just remember that you have to keep an overall balance and try not to look like a Christmas tree (even if you really want Christmas to come faster)!

If you prefer shoes to walking bare feet, go for cowboy boots, uggs, beaded flats, leather sandals or cotton espadrilles. Army boots with a long, flowing dress and a military jacket are a very boho-chic choice, especially if you add a large leather belt, layers of necklaces and long earrings. For a more flower-power touch, add a Pocahontas headband or a floppy hat, and add on your iPod some tunes from the Beatles, Bob Dylan or Jimmy Hendrix.

Marc by Marc Jacobs, Chloe, Missoni, Diane von Furstenberg, Anna Sui, Matthew Williamson and Joseph Altuzarra are a real inspiration for all “bohemians”, with their vintage-inspired collections and their fresh, modern take on hippie style, along with celebrities like Sienna Miller, Kate Moss, Lindsay Lohan, the Olsen twins or Zooey Deschanel.
